Save the primitive breeds

Karakachan horses and dogs are indigenous primitive breeds used for centuries in the farm activity of the Bulgarian mountain nomadic communities. It is believed that they are remnant populations of the oldest farm animals not only on the Balkans, but also in Europe and worldwide.
In recent decades, agriculture mechanization, a nomad settle down and forced migration to the cities, led to strongly reduce in the population of the both breeds. The lack of systematic attention of preserving them and some unscientific experiments (especially with karakachan dogs) brougth to expletive loss of their natural quality.
At the moment there is a real risk of losing the genetics qualities of these ancient breeds because of the:
- no taking care for the breeds,
- lack of systematic scientific interest in them,
- crossing karakachan dogs and horses with other breeds and
- keeping them in not typical conditions for the breed

The same reasons already led to the loss of two other local breed horses – Deliormanski and Kamchiyski and bringing other breeds to endanger.
Cultivation of tribal animals should be most similar to traditional conditions. Moderate mountain climate and the relatively mild winter weather in the Plana mountain, allows year-round raise in free mode. Traditional for the karakachan horses is loaded by movement in the mountains by train rider or cargo service activities associated with ethnographic and ecological tourism.
Karakachan dogs will be trained to accompany the caravan traveling and to protect the herd from predators.
Creating a basis for breeding karakachan dogs and horses in their natural conditions in the immediate vicinity of the capital of Bulgaria will change the status of uncultivated grassland in Plana mountain and preserve indigenous breeds in most local natural conditions and pure breeding.
